What is domestic violence?

Domestic violence is generally between two people who are in a romantic relationship or who are living together. It can be charged as either a misdemeanor or felony depending on the extent of violence involved. Restraining orders are usually granted at the beginning of these cases. This makes life very difficult for people who live together because the defendant is required to leave the house.

Domestic violence is handled differently from other criminal charges

Because of the seriousness with which domestic violence is viewed by law enforcement, the prosecutor will frequently move forward even when the alleged victim no longer wishes to pursue the case. The consequences of a conviction of domestic violence are significant and can include jail time, a mandated 52-week batterer's program, restraining orders and fines.

The courts handle domestic violence cases differently. Evidence of prior domestic abuse and other criminal incidents can be used by the prosecutor. Because of Fred Thiagarajah's experience with the domestic violence unit, our law firm is uniquely equipped to handle such cases. We employ the thorough and detail-oriented method that we use to develop all criminal defense cases when defending a client charged with domestic violence.
