Violence against women

The 1994 Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) allows women married to U.S. citizens or legal permanent residents to obtain green cards without the sponsorship of their husbands if they were subjected to battery and assault by the husband. United Nations Conventions Against Torture

The U.N. prohibits one country from returning a citizen to his or her home country if it is clear that the returnee may be tortured.
