On Thursday, December 27, 2012, a 37-year-old San Diego mother, Patricia Corby, plead guilty to second-degree murder.
Moments after drowning her 4-year-old autistic son in the family bathtub, Corby turned herself in by driving to the San Diego Police Department with her lifeless son wrapped in a blanket. After admitting that she had drowned her own son, she revealed to the prosecution that she attempted to take her own life afterwards but was unsucessful. After being taken into custody by SDPD, Corby also confessed that she murdered her son because she was overwhelmed by the task of being his caretaker. “She felt like she had no life,” a district attorney’s investigator said.
Duane Corby, the 4-year-old’s father was present when his wife plead guilty to murdering their son. He states that he was at work when the tragic incident took place. Moreover, he stressed that his wife never showed any signs of mental ilness and that the couple had invested over $70,000 in medical treatments for their son.
Corby will be sentenced on January 28th in San Diego. Second-degree murder is punishable by life in prison with the possibility of parole in 15 years. First-degree murder allows for the possibility of parole only after 25 years.
