William Husel, a former doctor who resides in Ohio has been accused of intentionally overdosing and killing over two dozen patients. On Wednesday, June 5th, Husel pleaded not guilty to 25 counts of murder. The criminal investigation for this case has been occurring for the past six months. According to the prosecution, Husel gave excessive amounts of painkillers to his patients from 2015 to 2018, advancing the death of some and causing the death of others. It was found that one victim of Husel’s, Beverlee Schirtzinger’s health could have been improved with proper treatment.

Unfortunately, she died after Husel prescribed her a fatal dose of fentanyl, a powerful painkiller. According to the investigators of this case, Husel ordered doses that ranged from 10 to 40 times greater than deemed medically appropriate. Husel’s defense attorney, Richard Blake, reminded the public of the circumstances of this case.

Claiming that Husel never intended to speed up a patient’s death, Blake states, “I think it’s important that everyone watching this understand that the patients that we are talking about are end-of-life patients. They were going to die whether Dr. Husel was on, or whether another doctor was on.”

Mount Carmel Health System, which was the hospital involved, made the authorities aware of Husel after conducting an internal investigation of their own and they continue to cooperate with law enforcement.
