Red Light Cameras Removed

July 28, 2011

Fred Thiagarajah

The City of Los Angeles has decided to stop using red light cameras to enforce red light violations.  The use of the red light cameras is costing the city too much money.  The cameras are still being used in five Orange County cities, including Santa Ana and Garden Grove.  In 2008, red light cameras were discontinued in Fullerton after it was discovered the city was illegally paying commissions to the company that operated the cameras.  Other cities in Orange County, including Costa Mesa and Irvine, voluntarily stopped using red-light cameras to enforce traffic violations.  Anaheim voters passed a law permanently banning the use of red light cameras.
