Gun Control Laws in California

December 19, 2012

Fred Thiagarajah

In the wake of the recent massacre on December 14, 2012, at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, the debate about gun control has been ignited again.  It seems to make sense that tighter regulation of guns is needed in light of the tragedies in Connecticut and Oregon and the near tragedy at the Fashion Island Mall in Newport Beach.  Earlier in the same week, on Tuesday December 11, 2012, a gunman opened fire in a shopping mall in Happy Valley, Oregon, which is a suburb of Portland.

The gunman, Jacob Tyler Roberts, 22, shot three people before killing himself. Two of victims died.  Adam Lanza, 20, killed 26 people at the Sandy Hook Elementary school, most of them elementary school children, before killing himself.   And then the day after the Sandy Hook tragedy, Marcos Gurrola drives to Fashion Island and purposefully fires 54 rounds at the mall.  Fortunately, nobody was killed, but a mother and her 4-year old daughter were hurt when panicked shoppers fled the danger.  All three tragedies highlight the importance of stricter gun regulations.
