Connor Snellings, the son of Louisiana’s US Senator Mary Landrieu, was arrested and charged with DUI and a hit and run on a pedestrian, after driving the wrong way on a one-way street. His blood alcohol level was .211. In California, Snellings would be charged with violations of Vehicle Code sections 23152(a) & 23152(b) for the DUI, and a violation of Vehicle Code section 20001 for the hit and run causing injury to a person. All of these crimes are wobblers, which means they can be charged as misdemeanors or felonies, depending on the extent of the injuries suffered by the pedestrian. In addition to the underlying DUI charges, a person whose blood alcohol level is .15 or more can be charged with an enhancement under Vehicle Code section 23578, which allows the court to impose additional penalties, including requiring a 9-month DUI class instead of the normal 3-month DUI class, on first time misdemeanor DUIs.
